The Urban Folk Music Revival

An 8-Week "Edu-tainment" Course Taught by Music Historian Cary Ginell

What was the Urban Folk Revival? In the 1950s, while many teenagers were listening to Elvis Presley and Rock ’n’ Roll, something was happening at the college campuses of America, which began to be awash with clean-cut groups playing acoustic guitars and singing old folk songs. Where did this come from? In reality, the folk revival had already been going on for 50 years, but was hidden under the mainstream. In this course, we will explore how the folk music boom of the 1950s and ‘60s occurred and how it was absorbed into American popular culture. Music is a product of its times, and folk music definitely ascribed to that. We will trace the development of folk music in the 20th century that led to its rise in the 1950s and its reflection of American history and social development.
