Explore! Architecture and Construction: Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art
About this event
We will learn the story of the construction of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, which is embedded in the Arkansas Ozarks. This museum has become a place to experience art, architecture, and lifelong learning in an inspiring natural setting.
On our docent-led tour we will explore the surprising stories behind the conception, design, and construction of this unique museum. We will journey along the four-year construction timeline with aerial images and photos taken from cranes. We will explore the engineering challenges, such as coaxing Town Branch Creek through weirs to form the Museum Ponds, and developing the custom-shaped beams and intricate cable system that support some of the Museum’s distinctive ceilings. We will learn about the painstaking process of forming architectural-quality concrete structures, then hand polishing each one to a gleaming finish.
We will also learn about the world renowned architect Moshe Safdie and how he was selected for this massive undertaking.
Zoom link will be sent prior to the tour.
