About this event
We will be discussing "The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Plague in History" by John M. Barry. The discussion will be facilitated by Richard and Ruth Dickes.
About the Book:
A New York Times Bestseller, the book is a detailed historical description of the 1918 flu pandemic and its impact in the US and worldwide. It is carefully researched and focuses on the state of medical knowledge at the time and its ongoing advancement, the movement of the flu around the world, the impact of politics on management of the flu (interesting view of Woodrow Wilson) and the a description of the main people involved in managing and understanding the flu. This text was referenced in The Premonition, which we read in June as the book that persuaded George Bush to set up a team which could set methods for dealing with a pandemic. The book is a majestic, spellbinding treatment of a mass killer.
This book is available from the Los Angeles Public Library and is also on Kindle. Please read the book prior to attending the program.
